This rich and dreamy Spanish Hot Chocolate Caliente Recipe is made with cocoa powder, cream, sugar and spice.
Don’t think that hot chocolate is just for cold months, especially not after you try this amazingly decadent Spanish Hot Chocolate Caliente recipe. Use it to dip fresh fried churros or cookies, too.
When I traveled to Barcelona, Spain, I enjoyed this wonderfully thick Spanish hot chocolate that the locals couldn’t get enough of.
It has just the right amount of choco-goodness that folks love in hot chocolate but it also offers a rich, thick consistency that encourages dunking your favorite cookie or churro in it.
The truth is, Spain isn’t the only country obsessed with chocolate, but their love for this Spanish Caliente recipe cannot be dismissed.
Keep in mind, that this isn’t your run-of-the-mill hot chocolate that you fill a huge mug and sip away. It’s actually quite the opposite.
Spanish Caliente is usually served in 4 ounce portions (or less) that go quite a long way in satisfying one’s chocolate craving.
How to Make Spanish Hot Chocolate Recipe
You will need to use a good quality cocoa powder for this recipe. I like to use Droste Belgium Cocoa Powder because it offers the smoothest taste.
Then using a medium size sauté pan, add all of the ingredients and cook slowly on medium heat until the hot chocolate is well combined and thick.

I like to use a small whisk to help incorporate the cocoa powder into the rest of the ingredients. But once the rich liquid reaches the right temperature, you can use a spoon to finish the job.
All in all, it’s the perfect treat anytime of the day (or night). Enjoy!
