Practically anytime. That being said, it’s usually served on a day with a special meaning. Here are just a few of the most popular times:
- Mother’s Day
- Father’s Day
- Valentine’s Day
- Get Well Day
- Christmas Day
- New Year’s Day
But you don’t have to limit yourself to just these dates. Sometimes being spontaneous is all it takes to making a morning memorable.

5 Simple Breakfast in Bed Ideas
To make the process go smoothly, I’ve broken it down step by step. And, I’ve also shared my favorite tips and ideas, not to mention recipes for making a breakfast they’ll never forget.
To pull off the perfect breakfast in bed, it’s best to do a bit of preparation first.
You’ll need the mandatory, plates, silverware, and coffee cup and/or juice glass. You can use what you use on a daily basis or you can opt for some that have been purchased at thrift sales or at a dollar store.
Finally, another must-have for breakfast in bed is a breakfast serving tray. You’ll need something to carry the food to the bedroom, so choose a sturdy tray.
You can use a sided tray that sits on the lap…
…or one that straddles the legs.
Either way, it should be large enough to handle the service ware you’ll need.
Or better still, you can make one yourself with just a few supplies. Check out this quick and easy bed tray tutorial.

3. Plan the Menu
You don’t have to make an elaborate meal in order to wow your special someone. In fact, sometimes the simplest meals are the best—especially if you are employing the help of young chefs.
Consider the following when planning the breakfast menu:
• Choose foods that aren’t too crumby. You don’t want to have to shake off the sheets after breakfast—just saying.
• Avoid drippy and sticky foods. This too, can be a problem especially if your special someone is trying to eat without making a mess on the bedding. Hint: Provide a warm, damp wash cloth after breakfast to cleanse the hands and refresh the breakfaster.
• Enlist the kids. Kids can be great helpers in the kitchen. Just assign them age appropriate tasks to make them feel a part of the process.
4. Personalize the Breakfast Experience
Too often we think we think we need to purchase everything in order for something to be special, but this isn’t necessarily true, especially when it comes to breakfast in bed.
Think creative and DIY with love by making one (or more) of the following items:
- Quilt a Pretty Placemat
- Monogram a Napkin
- Make a Greeting Card
- Design a Napkin Holder
- Craft some Paper Flowers
- Fold a Flower Cone
- Create a Menu Card
You can even write a Homemade Newspaper and include some fun gossip, gripping tales and hand drawn images!
And don’t forget to include their favorite crossword puzzle just for fun.
5. Delivery Service with a Smile
When you’re ready to deliver the breakfast tray, make sure your special someone has plenty of plumped pillows behind their back. Don’t forget a towel or other covering to protect the bedding.
Finally, smile to make your loved one feel super special.
