This Hungarian Cabbage and Noodles (Haluski) recipe is a low-cost meatless main or side dish made with sautéed cabbage and soft egg noodles that’s ready in 20 minutes.
How to Make Hungarian Cabbage and Noodles Recipe
One of my favorite meatless meals, Haluski, or Hungarian Cabbage and Noodles, is made with sautéed or fried cabbage and soft egg noodles.
This Hungarian-inspired recipe, Cabbage and Noodles is a very old recipe. At one time, it was considered peasant food, since it only required three ingredients, butter (or lard), cabbage and noodles, and could easily feed a large family for pennies on the dollar.
In fact, one medium head cabbage could easily feed six hungry adults.
What I like about this recipe is that it cooks up in under 20 minutes, start to finish.
It’s a one pot meal that you add seven cups of cabbage and fry with butter and oil (bacon grease is sometimes used for more flavor). To this you will add sweet paprika. You will cook this until the cabbage becomes softened. At this point you will add four cups of cooked egg noodles. And that’s it!
Now Hungarian Cabbage and Noodles spans not only generations but also regions in Europe. And, along with this are different inclusions as to potential ingredients.

- Hungarian sausage
- smoke butt
- smoked ham hocks
- parsley root
- boiled red potatoes
- cubed russet potatoes
- Shanghai noodles
- Udon noodles

Old Fashioned Hungarian Noodles and Cabbage
- 7 cups cabbage green, chopped
- 5 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp olive oil bacon grease (optional)
- 4 cups pasta fettuccine or egg noodles, cooked
- 1 tbsp Hungarian Sweet Paprika
- Salt and Pepper to taste
- In a large stockpot place all ingredients, except pasta and cook for about 15 minutes or until cabbage is tender. Add pasta and cook through for another 5 minutes. Serve hot. Enjoy!
