This recipe for Hungarian Cabbage and Noodles (also known as Haluski) is a low-cost meatless main or side dish made with sautéed cabbage and soft egg noodles that’s ready in 20 minutes.
How to Make Hungarian Cabbage and Noodles Recipe
One of my favorite meatless meals, Haluski, or Hungarian Cabbage and Noodles, is made with sautéed or fried cabbage and soft egg noodles.
This Hungarian-inspired recipe, Cabbage and Noodles is a very old recipe. At one time, it was considered peasant food, since it only required three ingredients, butter (or lard), cabbage and noodles, and could easily feed a large family for pennies on the dollar.
In fact, in my families’ case, one medium head cabbage easily fed a family of seven with leftovers to spare.
And, if you lead a busy life like most folks do, this recipe cooks up in under 20 minutes, start to finish.
To this add sweet Hungarian paprika, salt and pepper.
Cook this until the cabbage becomes softened.
Finally, add four cups of cooked egg noodles and stir well.
And that’s it! Dinner is ready.
Now Hungarian Cabbage and Noodles spans not only generations but also regions in Europe. And, along with this are different inclusions as to potential ingredients.
I’ve tried most of those noted below and enjoy the versatility of this dish.
