Many times when I travel, I get inspired by the food and drink of the locales I visit. And, this recipe is no different.
This Green Apple Sangria reminds me of one such late summer night I spent north of Barcelona while traveling in Spain.
There in a rustic hillside town of St Lorencz, my husband, his cousin and friends sat together enjoying the sounds of a mountain waterfall. It was sublime at best and the food and drink–well–it didn’t get better than that.
One of the most popular drinks we had there was sangria. Fruity and heady, much like the local scenery, the taste of sangria is difficult to explain except that it exudes a richness not found in muscat wines.
So, in remembrance of this wonderful trip, I decided upon this summery drink to celebrate the green hillsides and byways of a most beautiful country – Spain.
And, since being from Wisconsin and the home to quite a lot of beautiful apple orchards, I thought it best to make this delightfully flavorful cocktail with what else—Granny Smith Apples.

When this apple varietal is paired with white wine, this adds a bit of crispness to the drink, much like the Granny Smith apple itself.
Also, as in many sangria recipes, one must also include a fortified wine, and in this case, use apple whiskey.
Top this with 100% apple juice, and you have yourself a cocktail that you won’t forget. Enjoy!
Red Apple Sangria
Here’s a super sangria recipe idea for fall: Instead of white wine, use instead a red spiced wine along with apple whiskey, and apple cider (using the same proportions as in the recipe below).
And instead of a Granny Smith apple use a sliced Macintosh apple. Heat it if you wish or drink it cold over ice. Either way, the taste is remarkable!
