Fun Egg Decorating Ideas for Young and Old

Egg decorating can be a wonderful and fun family experience as I’ve found to be true with my own family.

In fact, there’s a number of creative Easter egg decorating projects that can be tweaked for both beginner and advanced crafters. It’s my hope you’ll be inspired to try one (or more).

But, even if you aren’t the crafty type there are still some simple and easy ways to decorate your Easter eggs without much fuss or muss.

So get your hard boiled eggs ready because here are my favorite egg decorating ideas that’ll take your typical Easter egg up a notch (or two):

1. Classic Dyed Eggs

If your family is like mine, you’ve probably used this classic egg decorating mainstay at one time or other: PAAS Egg Dye Kit. This method works beautifully and offers a variety of ways for you and your kids to create your favorite colors quickly and easily.

2. Natural Egg Dyes

Or, how about taking a “natural” approach and decorate your Easter eggs with dyes made from “fruits, herbs and vegetables” with a natural dye kit. Many are vegan, GMO-free and gluten-free.

Crafter Note: You may have to leave your eggs in the dye a bit longer for a bolder, brighter color when using natural dyes.

3. Silk Neck Tie Dye Eggs

This is Martha Stewart’s highest rated Easter egg decorating video. I wanted to share this with you because the results are amazing and the technique isn’t that difficult for older kids and adults.

4. Tattooed Eggs

Who would have thought that you could tattoo your eggs, but you can. Check out this easy tutorial by Brit + Co that gives the lowdown on this very quick craft. Project Link: DIY Temporary Tattoos

5. Rubber Band Eggs

This was one egg decorating craft I honestly had never thought of but love. You’ll get a variety of effects by varying the size and direction of the rubber bands. Sweet!

6. Eggs Decorated with Paper Napkins

I’m certain you’ll love this DIY craft that is a take on decoupage only with beaten egg whites and decorative napkins. Project Link: Easter Eggs with Napkins Tutorial

7. Pysanky Wax and Dye Eggs

This egg decorating idea comes from the Ukraine and the Slovic regions where you can create one-of-a kind, wax and dyed eggs. This is a very old process but it’s a similar technique much like the white crayon-dye method you might have done as a child. Pysanky (or Pysanka) Egg Kit (affiliate link)

8. Straw Eggs

This Czech-inspired craft takes a plain white egg and makes it a beautiful art piece using straw.

9. Glitter and Bling Eggs

Who said that eggs can’t have bling? This handy how-to video shows how easy it is to add glamorous accents to your faux Easter eggs with glitter and gems. They’re so pretty you’ll want to showcase your egg-ceptional eggs year after year.

10. Give Your Eggs Character

What if you could reinvent your eggs to be, say, a lamb or a chick or even a bunny? You can with this cute all-in-one Easter Egg Decorating Kit from Meri Meri.
