Give your holiday home decor a modern twist with one of these festive contemporary Christmas table settings ideas.
Contemporary Place Settings Ideas for Christmas
Here in the Midwest, Christmas is celebrated with much gusto and hoopla. And, that goes for our tables, as well.
So, I thought that it might be a great idea to share with you some of my favorite ideas for updating your holiday table settings.
It is after all, one of those distinctive times of the year when one breaks out the elegant china and bedecks the halls and home with fresh garlands, bright and shiny baubles and decorations.

1. Modern Holiday Table Setting
Simplicity is at its best with this super modern take with decorative polka dots. I love the fact that the design is repeated subtly in the layered plates and cloth napkin below. Tying it all together are the gold flatware and charger.

2. Farmhouse Chic
This table is probably one of my favorite in the fact that it uses both natural and out-of-the-box materials to create the perfect holiday mood. For example, take a look at the table cloth. It’s not your average cotton or polyester blend but rather flannel–giving the impression of warmth and conviviality. I’m also loving the birch pillars and natural pinecones. Definitely a country feel if there ever was one.

3. Woodsy-Inspired Table Setting with Toile Plates
What makes this table setting rock is the monochromatic and singular theme. Simply put, the miniature natural pine tree, to the wooden turned candle holders, to even the unadorned wood table seemingly match impeccably. This is a refreshing but seemingly understated table with loads of class. And, check out those toile print plates–beautiful!

4. Rustic Contemporary Table Setting
The first thing that strikes me with this beautiful tablescape are the log chargers. They set the mood perfectly for this holiday table, along with the greenery, pinecones and stick-like monogrammed ornaments.

5. Holiday Music-Inspire Table Setting
This out-of-this-world table setting is so beautifully bedecked that it sings to new heights on this contemporary holiday table. From the reflective charger, to the distinctly decorated flatware, and, of course, the one-of-a-kind musical placemat, it’s one of the most lavishly displayed formal place settings on this list.

6. Pretty in White Wonderland Table Setting
Don’t be afraid to accent white on your table. After all, tis the season of snow (especially for those of us in the Midwest). You can break up the monochrome vibe with bits of color here and there.
7. Mix and Matched Layered Table Setting
You’ve probably noticed that there’s been a couple of repeat accents in these table settings, like the gold deer, cream dishes, ornaments, and holiday crackers. I wanted to share this place setting because it just goes to show that you can mix and match color and texture to create a look that is truly modern.
8. Silver and Gold Christmas Place Setting
Don’t be afraid to mix and match your metals at your holiday celebrations. It’s all part of the beauty that surrounds the season. Along with this, add a bit of elegance with hand-laced placemats. They may look fragile but are actually well-suited for the modern table. I prefer off-white rather than stark white lace–just saying.
9. Red and White Table Setting
Oh, be still my heart! I love this primarily red and white tablescape. Truly Christmas-inspired if there ever was! I also love the translucent handles of the flatware. Clean lines of a modern holiday table.
10. Bejeweled Holiday Table Setting
I guess I was drawn to this place setting primarily because my own tastes run toward jewel-colored things. And, in the case of holiday celebrations, a jewel palette can definitely elevate your tablescape to new heights. And, yes, you can mix or match any of these these colors. I know I have and totally love the look.

11. Dreamy Creamy Old World Table Setting
One thing that stands out are the cream dinner, salad, and dessert plates. They’re present throughout a number of these table settings and for good reason. They’re elegant and can easily be dressed up or down depending upon your holiday theme. This reminds me of a Old World European holiday table, replete with Polish cut crystal goblets.
12. Old Fashioned Table Setting
Now don’t get me wrong, I love the tried and true designs. But what makes this “old fashioned” place setting work is the eye to details that evoke Christmases past. I love the Victorian napkin ring, poinsettia cancel arrangements and white tapers, along with the understated white dinner and salad plates. Definitely a tribute to a simpler, gentler time.
13. Chic and Modern Table Setting
Contemporary holiday tablescapes offer tons of eye-candy for your holiday pleasure. And this setting is no different. It offers both natural and manmade elements, offset with classical patterns and muted colors that weave together beautifully.

14. Blue Christmas Table Setting
I love this aqua blue table setting with its white plates and informal polka dot accents.
15. Christmas Red Table Setting
Of all the Christmas table settings, I have to say this one is a standout. Look at how lavish it is with the beautifully chosen multi-red accents. It’s definitely eye-candy for the holidays.
16. Metallic Table Setting
Yes, you can mix metals up beautifully and elegantly, as in this holiday-inspired table setting. A little bit of metallic mock greenery isn’t bad either.
17. Toile Holiday Table Setting
This beauty comes directly from PotteryBarn.com. I had to share this because it bridges the gap between the past and present. Vintage toile is highlighted nicely in the stoneware and salad plates. I do love the added touch of tartan to give it a bit of a highland’s feel.
18. Red Chevon Table Setting
Oh, the graphic design of this place setting is so contemporary. And, while it’s Christmas red, you can truly see how the pattern is repeated subtly in the accents.
